It was an early start for Amy on the morning of BBC Radio 2’s 500 Words Grand Final, which was held on 16 June 2017 at the Tower of London. Strathearn School’s Amy Major secured her place in the final with her spooky story, ‘In the Moonlight’, a great achievement considering there were more than 140,000 tales submitted by children from across the UK. The Chris Evans Breakfast Show was broadcasting the events of the final live, and Amy, having travelled the furthest to participate in the proceedings, was invited to the microphone to chat to Chris Evans. She was even asked to introduce the news, which was that morning being read by stalwart journalist, Moira Stewart.
Amy, who is from Dundonald, thoroughly enjoyed her morning, and met children’s authors David Walliams, Charlie Higson and Francesa Simon. Amy also talked with HRH the Duchess of Cornwall about her shortlisted story while photographers furiously snapped their meeting.
Amy was the only writer from Northern Ireland who had made it to the top 50 stories in the competition, and Strathearn’s Principal, Nicola Connery, recognised Amy’s achievement in a special assembly, where Amy shared her story with her fellow pupils.
