Belfast Grand Central Station came alive with music yesterday as the entire Ulster Orchestra performed in the station’s main concourse for the first time.
From Beethoven to Mozart, customers were entertained by the rousing performance in the heart of Ireland’s largest integrated bus and train facility.
The free 20-minute performance formed part of Translink’s Sounds at Saltwater programme and brought live orchestral music into the heart of one of Belfast’s busiest public spaces, as passengers, commuters and visitors stopped to listen.
The performance marked the closing event of this year’s Summer at Saltwater programme, which has brought film, heritage, arts and community activity to Saltwater Square and Belfast Grand Central Station throughout the summer.
Taking place during the opening week of the Ulster Orchestra’s 60th anniversary season, the event gave people the chance to experience the Orchestra ahead of its new season at the Ulster Hall, led by new Chief Conductor Anna Handler.
The performance also highlighted the role Belfast Grand Central Station and Saltwater Square can play in the city’s cultural life, creating opportunities for people to encounter music and other events as part of their everyday journeys.
Summer at Saltwater began in June with Screenings at Saltwater, a free outdoor cinema weekend, followed by Stories at Saltwater guided walking tours exploring the heritage, public art and local stories surrounding the new public space.
