The Ballad of Johnny and June, running at the Grand Opera House Belfast from Tuesday 4 August to Saturday 8 August, tells the true story of country music legends Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. Developed with the support and input of the Cash family, the production is narrated through the eyes of their son, John Carter Cash, giving the musical a personal, reflective quality. The show follows Johnny and June from their first meeting at the Grand Ole Opry in 1956 through to the final months of their lives, exploring fame, family, faith, addiction, resilience and the complicated bond that kept them connected. Rather than presenting June simply as part of Johnny’s story, the production gives proper weight to her own talent, humour and strength, with standout performances from Christina Bianco as June, Christopher Ryan Grant as Johnny and Ryan O’Donnell as John Carter Cash.
Featuring songs including I Walk the Line, Ring of Fire, Jackson, A Boy Named Sue and Hurt, the musical blends well-known hits with a thoughtful look at the lives behind them. A cast of nine performers take on multiple roles while singing, acting and playing live, supported by rich harmonies and Robert Brill’s warm, rustic set design, which creates the feeling of an intimate country music gathering.
