07/09/2026

Belfast School of Performing Arts (BSPA) is continuing its expansion across Northern Ireland with the opening of its 11th school in Newtownards this week, as the organisation celebrates another major milestone – more than 1,000 young people are now attending its classes every week.

The opening of the new school further establishes the organisation as a leading force in youth performing arts in Northern Ireland. Alongside its 11 schools, which cater for young people aged 3 to 18. BSPA also runs The Performance Academy for 16 to 24-year-olds who want to take their skills to the next level.

At the heart of BSPA is a simple ethos; to harness the power of musical theatre and performance to help young people develop confidence, creativity and friendships, both on and off the stage.

The new Newtownards school will offer classes across dance, music and drama, and will be led by an experienced teaching team comprising Corrie Earley in Dance, Ayesha Akkari in Music and Áine McConvey in Drama.

Peter Corry, Artistic Director of BSPA, said:

“Reaching our 11th school is an exciting milestone, but for us growth has never simply been about numbers. BSPA is about giving young people somewhere they can discover what they are capable of, build their confidence and feel part of something.

“Musical theatre is an incredibly powerful tool for young people. Whether they dream of a career on stage or simply want to make friends, have fun and find their voice, there is a place for them at BSPA. We’re delighted to now bring that opportunity to Newtownards.”

Tine McVeigh, Managing Director of BSPA, added:

“Reaching 1,000 young people coming through our doors every week is something we are incredibly proud of. At the heart of every BSPA school is the same ethos; to nurture confident, happy young people through the power of musical theatre.

“Newtownards has a fantastic community and we have assembled a brilliant teaching team in Corrie, Ayesha and Áine. This team is committed and excited to inspiring the next generation and all of them encapsulate what BSPA is all about.”

The new school which is located at Model Primary school Newtownards runs every Saturday incorporating the main school and a Junior School. This opening represents another significant milestone in BSPA’s continued growth, with its network of 11 schools providing young people with professional tuition alongside opportunities to perform and experience the excitement and camaraderie of musical theatre.
