Investing in a Yoga Mat: Why It Matters More Than You Think

23/02/2026

We are spoilt for choice when it comes to beautiful yoga studios in Belfast. From Yoga Quarter to Maitri Studio and other new ones popping up.  But while we invest in classes, memberships and workshops, how often do we think about the one piece of equipment that quite literally supports our practice?

Complete Unity Yoga is a family-run sustainable yoga brand founded by experienced teachers Will and his wife Malene. Designed using natural tree rubber and jute fibres, their mats are built to be planet friendly without compromising performance. Bloom’s health and wellness writer Mars Webb tested the CompleteGrip™ mat and asked founder Will what really matters when investing in one.

What makes your yoga mats different from others on the market?

Most yoga mats available today are made from oil-derived plastics such as PU, BPA, TPE, PVC and microfibres.

In contrast, our mats are made from sustainably harvested natural tree rubber and natural jute fibres. They are produced using a zero-waste manufacturing process and packaged in FSC-certified kraft paper. For us, sustainability and performance must sit side by side.

What materials do you use and why?

Our mats feature CompleteGrip™ technology, combining precision-crafted natural jute fabric with natural tree rubber through a specialised manufacturing process. This creates a tactile texture and an exceptionally secure, non-slip surface.

Natural jute is a sustainable plant fibre that offers strength and grip, while natural tree rubber provides cushioning and stability without relying on oil-derived plastics. Together, they create a high-performance mat made from renewable resources.

How do you balance grip, cushioning and weight?

Grip is always our first priority. A secure surface builds confidence and allows the practitioner to move without distraction, making practice safer and more enjoyable.

We design our mats to be dense and supportive, offering reliable joint protection. Even our 2mm lightweight travel mat provides impressive cushioning and stability.

Natural rubber is slightly heavier than plastic alternatives. Rather than seeing this as a drawback, we see it as a benefit. The added weight helps the mat stay firmly in place, preventing shifting or bunching that can interrupt focus and flow.

What advice would you give a complete beginner?

See your first yoga mat as an investment in your wellbeing. While it may be tempting to choose a cheaper option, quality matters.

Well-designed equipment enhances comfort, stability and confidence, making your practice more enjoyable. When you enjoy your practice, you are far more likely to stay consistent and experience the long-term benefits of regular yoga.

How should someone care for and clean their yoga mat?

Let your mat breathe, particularly after a sweaty practice.

Wipe it with a damp cloth when needed. From time to time, clean it with a gentle solution of diluted vinegar and warm water to remove any build-up of dirt and natural oils.

How long should a mat last with regular use?

The lifespan of a yoga mat depends on how frequently it is used and how well it is cared for. Some customers replace theirs annually, while others continue using them for three to five years or more.

To extend its life, keep it out of direct sunlight, as prolonged exposure can cause natural rubber to dry out. With proper care, a well-made mat can remain supportive and high-performing for years.

What mistakes do beginners make when choosing a mat?

One of the most common mistakes is buying an unsuitable mat and then needing to replace it shortly afterwards.

As simple as it sounds, the saying ‘Buy it nice, or buy it twice’ is fitting. By choosing a premium, sustainable mat from the beginning, you set yourself up for a more stable and enjoyable practice.

Are there specific mats for different types of yoga?

For restorative and yin yoga, where the pace is slower and the body is supported for longer periods, something softer may be suitable.

For movement-based practices such as vinyasa, grip and cushioning are far more important. With frequent transitions and shifting weight between hands and feet, a mat with strong traction and reliable joint support makes a significant difference to both safety and confidence.
