The smash-hit musical comes to The MAC Belfast in the first major summer production by the Alfie Boe James Huish Academy of Theatre Arts
A dazzling West End sensation is making its way to Belfast this summer, and all eyes are on Jamie.
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie opens at The MAC Belfast this July in the first ever summer production from the newly established Alfie Boe James Huish Academy of Theatre Arts. Founded last year by internationally renowned West End star Alfie Boe and acclaimed Northern Irish performer James Huish, the academy was set up to nurture and train the next generation of local musical theatre talent. This debut production features a standout cast of top students drawn from across Northern Ireland.
Based on an extraordinary true story, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie has captured hearts around the world with its infectious energy, uplifting message, and sensational score. The musical follows 16-year-old Jamie New, a teenager living on a council estate in Sheffield who doesn’t quite fit in but is determined to live his truth and take centre stage. Supported by his loving mum and loyal friends, Jamie battles prejudice, beats the bullies, and emerges from the shadows to become a shining star.
But Jamie’s journey to the spotlight is remarkable offstage, too. The show began life as a BBC documentary, telling the real-life story of Jamie Campbell, a teenager who dreamed of going to prom in a dress. That documentary caught the eye of theatre director Jonathan Butterell, who developed the musical with writer Tom MacRae and composer Dan Gillespie Sells. Premiering at Sheffield Theatres, it soon transferred to London’s West End where it ran for over three years at the Apollo Theatre, spawning a UK tour, an award-winning film adaptation on Amazon Prime, and an international debut in Los Angeles.
With its joyous soundtrack, laugh-out-loud moments, and powerful themes of identity, acceptance and courage, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is a must-see musical for all ages. The MAC’s summer production promises to deliver all the sparkle and spirit of the original with a fresh local cast lighting up the stage.
Don’t miss the musical everybody’s talking about.
