Barnum – A big-top spectacle packed with song, colour and circus magic

14/10/2026

Step right up for a night of musical theatre with a difference. Barnum, the circus musical celebrating the life of legendary showman PT Barnum, brought a welcome burst of colour, energy and big-top magic to Belfast’s Grand Opera House last night, delivering an evening filled with vibrant music, dazzling circus skills and plenty of theatrical spectacle.

At the centre of it all was Matt Rawle as PT Barnum, the ambitious impresario whose flair for showmanship and larger-than-life personality helped transform the circus into a world of wonder. Rawle brought charisma and energy to the role, capturing Barnum’s appetite for fame, fortune and the extraordinary, while giving the production a compelling central presence.

One of the show’s greatest strengths was its music. The upbeat numbers kept the pace lively, lifting the audience with infectious rhythms and a sense of exuberance that suited Barnum’s extravagant world perfectly. The songs provided the beating heart of the production, ensuring there was rarely a dull moment as the story unfolded. Choreography was by Oti Mabuse, familiar to television audiences from Strictly Come Dancing. Her involvement brought an extra sense of movement and dynamism to a production that thrives on energy and visual impact.

But this is no ordinary musical, and its real trump card was the circus itself. The performers brought an added dimension of excitement to the stage, with their skills and daring acts creating moments of genuine spectacle. The trapeze acts I would say were world class! Their presence gave the production an authentic big-top atmosphere, blurring the line between musical theatre and circus performance. It was a reminder that, sometimes, the most effective theatrical magic comes not from elaborate dialogue but from the sheer skill and audacity of performers doing what they do best.

There is an infectious enthusiasm at the heart of Barnum. It celebrates the power of imagination, the thrill of spectacle and the idea that the world is full of possibilities for those bold enough to dream big. While Barnum’s ambition and pursuit of success provide the story’s driving force, it is the sheer entertainment value of the production that makes it such an enjoyable theatrical outing.

For audiences looking for a night of escapism, Barnum delivers in abundance. Its lively score, charismatic leading man and talented circus performers combine to create a show that is colourful, energetic and unapologetically theatrical.
