Under starters orders, Translink’s Chris Conway and the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Deirdre Hargey, get together to announce a unique ‘My Way 5K’ challenge coming to the grounds of Belfast City Hall on 3rd June to kick-off the first day of Bus + Train Week.
In aid of Translink’s charity partner Cancer Focus Northern Ireland, the public transport body is encouraging entrants of all abilities to don their trainers and complete 50 laps of the track in celebration of the health benefits of taking public transport regularly and the 50th anniversary of the local cancer charity.
Chris Conway, Group Chief Executive, Translink, said:
“We’re keen to shine a light on the health benefits of taking public transport. Research shows that people who take the bus or train are more active, clocking up additional steps and burning more calories as they walk to and from the bus or train. When you combine active travel into all or part of your daily commute it can make a huge difference to your overall well-being and we think that’s worth celebrating!
“We look forward to seeing members of the public make the smart move to get active, enjoying a walk, jog or run around the grounds of Belfast City Hall on what we hope will be sunny day in June to raise money for our charity partner, Cancer Focus!”
Roisin Foster, Chief Executive, Cancer Focus NI, said:
“This event is going to be an opportunity for the public to ‘get on track’ to celebrate the launch of Translink Bus & Train Week 2019, but also to help celebrate Cancer Focus NI turning 50 this year.
“All the money raised from ‘My Way 5k’ will go towards funding Cancer Focus NI’s Keeping Well Van. The van is a vital service that helps people benefit from free health checks, cancer awareness and healthy lifestyle information directly at their workplaces and communities across Northern Ireland.
“Even the smallest donation will help local people to benefit from our Keeping Well Van so sign up today and be part of this very unique and fun event.”
Entrants can make a donation and sign-up for a one-hour time slot to complete their 50 laps. Participants will receive a goody bag with a t-shirt, bottle of water and sun cream. For further information about the event here: http://cancerfocusni.org/events/my-way-5k/
