LEGENDARY RADIO SERIES THE McCOOEYS LIVE! AT GRAND OPERA HOUSE BELFAST

The McCooeys, the classic, hit radio series featuring Belfast’s most famous family, created by the legendary actor, director and writer Joseph Tomelty, is back! The McCooeys Live! will take to the Grand Opera House Studio stage from Wed 16 February 2022 – Sat 26 February 2022, featuring some of Northern Ireland’s finest acting talent. The McCooeys Live! will be the first show in the Grand Opera House Studio since the theatre reopened in October 2021, following the completion of its £12.2 million restoration and development project.

The lives of The McCooeys, their relatives, friends and neighbours were followed by hundreds of thousands of listeners across Northern Ireland between 1949 and 1955. Every Saturday night people tuned in to listen to the ups and downs of Granda, Maggie, Aunt Sarah, Sally, Bobby Greer, Henrietta Toosel and others. Today, many still recall sitting around the radio listening to the hugely popular production on the BBC Northern Ireland Home Service.

Now they’re back, in episodes unheard since they were first broadcast and coming to the
stage for the first time. And it’s business as usual, with drama aplenty when the McCooeys are burgled, and laugh-out-loud comedy when Henrietta Toosel makes her first appearance, and as Granda’s lost raffle ticket threatens his hopes of a holiday in Newcastle.

The McCooeys Live! features a cast of Northern Ireland’s finest acting talent: Dan Gordon as Granda, Carol Moore as Maggie, Joseph Tomelty’s granddaughter Hannah Carnegie as Sally, Patrick McBrearty as Bobby Greer, Christina Nelson as Aunt Sarah, Mary Moulds as Henrietta Toosel and Colin Carnegie as the Announcer. Audiences will be transported back to The McCooeys original radio studio setting and watch as the actors recreate that era including live sound effects!

The McCooeys Live! is supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

Looking forward to The McCooeys Live!, Hannah Carnegie from Centre Stage Theatre Company commented:
“Centre Stage Theatre Company is delighted to be bringing the much-loved Belfast family The McCooeys, created by my grandfather Joseph Tomelty, to the Grand Opera House Studio. We were overwhelmed by the support we received when we revived The McCooeys online for audiences during lockdown. It really stuck a chord with such a wide range of ages that it encouraged us to bring it back for a live stage production. We hope audiences will enjoy re-connecting with the drama and comedy of this once hugely popular family, and that new audiences will discover the magic and memories this ground-breaking radio series brought to so many.”

Noirin McKinney, Director of Arts Development from The Arts Council of Northern Ireland, said:
“The Arts Council of Northern Ireland is pleased to support Centre Stage Theatre Company in bringing this iconic and much-loved radio series back to life on the stage of the Grand Opera House.  The combination of brilliantly witty writing with an exciting cast promises to be an evening to remember.”

Speaking ahead of the show’s run in the Grand Opera House Studio, Ian Wilson, Chief Executive of the Grand Opera House, added:

“I am delighted to be working with Centre Stage in bringing the show to a wider audience. The production, with its brilliant cast, is perfect for the intimate setting of the theatre’s Studio. Huge numbers of people tuned into Joseph Tomelty’s The McCooeys each week during the 1950s, and this production brings to life some of the scripts that made the show such a massive hit with a generation of radio listeners.”

The McCooeys Live! will be staged at the Grand Opera House Studio from Wed 16 February – Sat 26 February, 2022. Tickets start from £11.75.
