Hello Bloom readers, at last it’s June and we’re spending more time than ever outside soaking up the warmer days and longer evenings… but the question is if your outdoor space is up to spec for those impromptu evenings out on the patio with friends or long Sunday lunches with the family? Ok, so perhaps you’ve cleaned the garden furniture and swept up the deck, but it’s all still looking just a little, let’s just say, ‘meh’?  Well, fret not.  I’m going to show you some styling additions that you might not have considered for your outdoor space… but, believe me, they work very effectively to elevate your patio to a whole new level!

Firstly, invest in an outdoor rug. They’re an inexpensive way to cosy up a patio, cover up worn patches of decking and brighten up a shady spot with a welcoming pop of colour.  IKEA has a good selection of flat woven outdoor rugs in bright colours and patterns that can withstand sun, rain and dirt – you can go for summery neon brights or muted Scandi pastels, the choice is yours.

Brighten up an uninspiring fence with some vertical planting, especially if your outside space is at a premium, however it also makes for a pleasing view from indoors.  Suspend a variety of planters, such as old tins (spray painted if you wish) or twist wire coat hangers around the rim of little ceramic pots and attach them to the fence, then fill with herbs, summer annuals and/or trailing ivy to create a lush green boundary for very minimal effort.

Every patio needs a coffee table!  Use an upturned metal planter, roughly sand back a wooden pallet or set planks of reclaimed wood onto bricks for an instant side table with a cool, rustic vibe.  Pop a planter on top and hey presto, you have the perfect spot to enjoy your cuppa in.

Elevate your outdoor space as you would a room inside the home, with some salvaged pieces and artwork dotted about the place.  Old lanterns, mirrors, rusty ironwork and vintage finds will add lots of character and visual interest to your space.  A mirror hung from a wall will make the patio area appear larger, whilst some decorative salvaged accessories will help reflect your personality and make your outdoor space a true extension of your home.  Scour car boot sales and charity shops for interesting pieces, such as old frames, ceramics and pottery.
