What a summer it’s been so far! I’ve been basking in the sunshine as much as possible with beach days and explorations. Having explored much of Ireland on with my family as a kid I’m keen to rediscover and revisit places of my childhood summer holidays.
One place we didn’t explore though was Donegal so where better to start a “staycation” than The Hills. With four days to explore the vast stretch of beaches and the endless hills and mountains we had a full itinerary of adventure and relaxation scheduled in too. For two nights we glamped in Dunfanaghy Holiday Village, a fishing trawler and a railway carriage amongst the bell tents make for unique experiences. From here we explored Tramore Beach, Horn Head, Murder Hole Beach and Muckish Mountain. Taking the miners path up the latter for spectacular views of the county. A tough climb but worth the sight of the abandoned quarry alone. Old rusted mining machinery sit on the mountains edge, forgotten remnants of a bygone era.
En route to our next port of call (which was a remote cottage in the deserted fishing village of Port) we escaped the mainland for the high rocky cliffs of Tory Island. Greeted on arrival by the King, yes actually a King, we headed east to explore the spectacular landscape. Chasing waterfalls and cave adventures with sand amongst our toes have made for some truly memorable times along this part of the Wild Atlantic Way. I can’t wait to explore more.
Keeping it coastal I made for Portrush for the one day Coaster festival. A showcase of local singer songwriters and bands in both Babushka Café and the Atlantic Bar. What better than an afternoon by the sea at an intimate gig with the beautiful sounds of Reeva, Brash Issac, DANI and Joshua Burnside to keep you entertained. A great addition to the festival calendar!
