YOUNG DRIVERS ON THE ROAD TO CHEAPER INSURANCE WITH TELEMATICS

New partnership for Acclaim Driving School and Abbey Insurance Brokers

Abbey Insurance, Northern Ireland’s largest locally owned insurance broker, is helping young drivers stay safe on the roads and reduce their insurance premiums through innovative new telematics technology and a partnership with the province’s largest driving school, Acclaim.

AbbeyGo, the broker’s dedicated Young Driver insurance policy, uses smart monitoring technology to encourage safe driving in return for lower annual premiums.  To reinforce its focus on road safety, Abbey Insurance has partnered with Acclaim Driving School to encourage young drivers to keep up the good driving behaviour they are taught whilst learning to drive.

With PSNI stats reporting that 2,076 road traffic accidents in 2017 involved a driver aged 25 or under, there is a clear need to help young drivers keep up the good driving practice they learn in order to be deemed safe and pass their driving test.

AbbeyGo involves the use of telematics technology from an in-car sensor which monitors how a young person behaves behind the wheel by recording various metrics such as braking, cornering and acceleration, as well the all-important speed.   The data is available via an online portal not only to the driver but also to parents and guardians, providing an additional level of accountability.

John McMichael from Abbey Insurance explained the new partnership with Acclaim Driving School, which offers its pupils an extra £50 discount on an AbbeyGo policy.  He said, “Young drivers are a high risk category to insure so the cost of insuring a young person for the first few years can be very high.  This is a great way of securing a discount on their insurance.  However, the main focus of AbbeyGo is on safer driving, so we have teamed up with Acclaim Driving School to keep the focus on the good driving practice taught by an instructor.  It’s keeping a watchful eye via remote monitoring technology and it holds them accountable.

Eileen Cummings from Acclaim Driving School explains. “On the whole, these early years of driving are where the good habits of driving instruction are either sustained or lost. We’re delighted to encourage our pupils to consider AbbeyGo as it’s the next best thing to having an instructor keeping an eye on you when you head out on the road on your own.  It also provides great peace of mind to a parent or guardian in those first early days of independent driving, as they can also access the driving data.”

John McMichael from Abbey Insurance explained. “Our new partnership with Acclaim is a great way to reinforce safe driving behaviour through continuous monitoring from the first days of getting out on the open road.  Providing peace of mind for parents and anything that can contribute to keeping young people safe on the roads with more money in their pocket has to be a good thing.”
